The Jim Henson Company will also executive produce.<br /><br />Currently titled “Faerie,” the series is described as a “modern Henson family adventure set in the magical world of Brian & Wendy Froud’s Faeries.”<br /><br />The official series description states: “When the Faeries kidnap an unsuspecting father, his family must venture into the Faerie realm to rescue him. Through their journey, they will discover their inner strength and unique potential, challenging the expectations that the human world has put upon them. At its core, Faerie is a story of perseverance and the strength of a family’s love, filled with magic, adventure, and self-discovery at every age.”<br /><br />The Jim Henson Company is repped by UTA.<br /><br />The Frouds have frequently collaborated with The Jim Henson Company. The couple met while working as designers on the iconic Henson film “The Dark Crystal” and went on to work with the company on the film “Labyrinth” and the recent Netflix series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” Wendy also worked on “The Muppet Movie,” “The Muppet Show,” and fabricated the Yoda puppet for “The Empire Strikes Back.” Brian’s other credits include the Henson series “Storyteller” as well as 2003’s “Peter Pan” and the 2016 film “Pete’s Dragon.”<br /><br />Outside of their screen work, Wendy’s other projects include illustrating the three books “A Midsummer Night’s Faerytale,” “The Winter Child,” and “The Faeries of Spring Cottage” by Terri Windling. Brian published the 1978 book “Faeries” with Alan Lee and his concept art was featured in the companion book “The World of the Dark Crystal.” His artwrok also serves as the basis for the “Faerielands” book series.</span>MuppetsHensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13804397875703135346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7930620819375379067.post-14760238435950166352023-12-10T14:52:00.005-05:002023-12-10T14:52:58.756-05:00Disney+ Ends The Muppets Mayhem After One Season<span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ6OyrNl9rabJH8qB_RG8MjltpLhyphenhyphen2KK7IHmX4EAAfyByEc5u3UruIvWIDHdDgdghqhVgQ7C5HDFdVpMoSYsRuQlLNHjkIoBPuX2x3hCScC9N8oBVlrJm54fvvxDrGVN_r97e36STp7WprWqf-ABtBELxyyItocTF-utEUqBNrpBWQqIL8jgwjZbW416NB/s1200/official-trailer-released-for-the-new-disney-series-the-muppets-mayhem.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ6OyrNl9rabJH8qB_RG8MjltpLhyphenhyphen2KK7IHmX4EAAfyByEc5u3UruIvWIDHdDgdghqhVgQ7C5HDFdVpMoSYsRuQlLNHjkIoBPuX2x3hCScC9N8oBVlrJm54fvvxDrGVN_r97e36STp7WprWqf-ABtBELxyyItocTF-utEUqBNrpBWQqIL8jgwjZbW416NB/s320/official-trailer-released-for-the-new-disney-series-the-muppets-mayhem.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>Disney+ is cutting Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem’s comeback tour short, cancelling <a href="https://tvline.com/t/the-muppets-mayhem/">The Muppets Mayhem</a> after one season, TVLine has reported.<br /><br />“What a long, strange trip it’s been!” co-creator and executive producer <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffYorkes/status/1727059923283189877">Jeff Yorkes wrote</a> on social media shortly after news of the show’s cancellation broke. “The highs (thanks Zoot!), the lows… A huge thank you to our loyal fans and viewers. Tickets to the acclaimed not-to-be-missed live stage show are on sale now: Friday, July 14th at 8pm, Saturday, July 15th at 5pm & 9pm, Sunday, July 16th at 3pm & 7pm, Friday, July 21st at 8pm, Saturday, July 22nd at 5pm & 9pm, and Sunday, July 23rd at 3pm & 7pm.<br /><br />Created by award-winning director and producer Brian Henson (Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island), and actor, director, and improv expert Patrick Bristow (Ellen, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Puppet Up! – Uncensored is never the same show twice, effortlessly blending increasingly unhinged feats of improv comedy with the unparalleled skill and originality of Henson puppeteers. Based on suggestions from the audience, the puppet anarchy – starring the unforgettable Miskreant puppets - is two shows in one: the improvised puppet action projected live on screens above the stage, and the puppeteers racing around below in full view of the audience to bring it all to life. These performances will also feature new interpretations of classic sketches originally created by Jim Henson that will be making their Puppet Up! – Uncensored debut. <br /><br />Available tickets include General Admission ($75), and VIP tickets ($175) which include priority seating, a souvenir, and a 90-minute preshow experience with a tour and question & answer with Brian Henson. A limited amount of advance purchase parking is also available for $15.00. Doors open and full cash bar will be available starting an hour before the show. Puppet Up! – Uncensored is not recommended for anyone under 16 and anyone under 14 will not be admitted.<br /><br />Puppet Up! – Uncensored is following all local health and safety protocols. The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance accomplishes the same goal, after watching that show there is no way your viewing experience of The Dark Crystal does not become greatly enhanced for it. Writing Muppets is hard but writing for The Electric Mayhem, that seems especially difficult, finally after 50 years, the band’s been properly fleshed out. One might argue it’s easier to write for them as they were never really fully developed to begin with, after 50 years we all know very well how each character behaves but in limited capacity. Finding that balance of expanding on those set rules is harder than a fan might think, well done to everyone involved, wonderfully executed. I consider this accomplishment to have been almost impossible, not just entertaining Muppet Fans but your casual viewer too using only The Electric Mayhem but clever storytelling allows for this and this was clever storytelling. And their Human co-stars also deserve credit for this, their interactions are like the ones between Kermit and Jenny in The Muppets Take Manhattan, you don’t see that a lot these days, that to me is the perfect way to act alongside these characters, it felt more real than acting. I’d say since Disney bought The Muppets the only production I’ve considered worthy to stand next to the classics is The Muppets (2011) squashed somewhere between Muppet Treasure Island and Muppets From Space. Muppets Mayhem however has that classic Muppet trilogy feel to it. Muppets as themselves, exploring the real world, treated like equals, as in “oh it’s just a living Muppet, no big deal”, it’s perfect, that nostalgic feeling many fans have craved for, that original trilogy and The Muppet Show feeling, this show gives you that, at least it did for me, my neurons can vouch for that. <br /><br /><br />You know when a review says something is heartfelt, clever, happy, joyful, sometimes words are spoken without true meaning, but here it all applies. There are so many layers to unpack here and what it does to help children, much better than what Sesame Street is doing right now. Fraggle Rock was rebooted in 2022 and like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance it’s one of those rare reboot gems that was needed to enhance the story not just the bank account. That’s what is meant by heartfelt, it is felt within the stories and messages it conveys so very well. Fraggle Rock the reboot, makes you appreciate the first show even more and The Electric Mayhem does this for their own characters all throughout their Muppet history. It’s not just a TV show, it’s a journey through the mind of Jim Henson and his team and this Muppets Mayhem team are very much connected to that cosmic Jim Henson energy flowing through every single Muppet that is worthy of its performer. Making an album and then releasing that album into the real world, same album seen on the show, how clever, marketing wise but creativity, believability and connection wise too. When they all eat those expired marshmallows and go on their marshmallow trip, so creatively Muppety, I really missed having that feeling from The Muppets. It resembled that of Kermit’s one on one in the desert scene in The Muppet Movie. And when they painted that house whilst singing “Can You Picture That”, that was beautiful, I felt goosepimples. This show opens and informs the viewers that The Electric Mayhem started on The Muppet Show (back in 1975) and have become this hugely popular never ending musical journey tourers they’ve all been on together. Perfect way to start, immediately it all becomes more real in our eyes. <br /><br />Until recently The Muppets seemed to shy away from their past projects, this one is unique in so many ways but more so for the fact that it truly delves into Muppet history. Rocking Robin, amazing that this was brought back and The Electric Mayhem singing it whilst the original played on screen, double amazing, makes the storytelling experience so much more real and effective. The various Electric Mayhem concerts, all those cool references from Croonchy Stars cereal to Mallory Gallery, even paging Dr. Oznowicz… someone make sure The Muppets get that doctor back, they need him. These days most shows are shit, they fall into the “eager to please and be popular trap” which is a trap in itself but many do not realize this. The team behind Muppets Mayhem are the ones we should be thanking for this cool musical Muppet experience, they understand what The Muppet represent, just like Steve Whitmire and Frank Oz. Let’s never forget these two, they deserve to be back with The Muppets and alongside this Muppet Mayhem quality level of storytelling. </span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Pepe, Walter, Penny, we need more new Muppets that fit perfectly alongside the old cast, the introduction of Penny is a great start, I already want a Penny action figure. I can’t say the same for that Turkey and that Weasel, what was their names? I don’t even remember, Joe I think was the Weasel, Joe from Legal, yes that’s him and Beverly, they were in there somewhere, still, they didn’t make a classic Muppet impression on me, Penny fits perfectly in a scene alongside Miss Piggy. Dr Teeth’s parents, when the episode ended with them standing at the door, I felt that excitement a “normal” person would feel watching a Human TV Drama and for that I’m so grateful. I was on the edge of my seat, who are these two, next episode please. I would have preferred if one of them had been a different colour, who do they think they are, Milhouse’s parents? Davies the Cactus stood out so much, in just one scene, the Bunnies and singing Teeth were also enjoyable but most especially for me, Zoot’s shoe Jimmy. I especially like how Morgan Freeman reacts to this nonsense, I’ve missed that type of style from The Muppets, it feels very classic. And all those Zoots, probably one of my favourite scenes, so many talented Zoots out there in the world. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">I like the balance of Muppets amongst Humans in “It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie”, I would have really enjoyed watching some Penguins also present at the Band’s concerts for example. As for no Kermit, no Miss Piggy, no Gonzo etc… I liked it. I was really expecting for Pepe, Rowlf, Scooter or Walter to show up at some point but I actually like the fact that they didn’t. It made this unique experience even more unique, as in The Electric Mayhem held their own. Asking their viewers to watch for story over easter eggs, very brave, bold and uniquely creative these days in Hollywood. Clifford, I was really expecting Clifford, I miss him, I think his character’s design is really cool, and there’s not many purple Muppets which is a plus. Peter Linz would have made a good purple Clifford I think but since he’s yellow Lips now, it should be someone who does not already perform a character in the band. Statler and Waldorf at the end, perfect timing to introduce familiar faces, there appearance really makes an impact. It’s like bringing you back into the fact that this is a Muppet Universe where Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and the rest of The Muppets are off doing their own things during the events of this show.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">As for the classic characters, so well written, very cleverly fleshed out, great backstories, I’ve become more emotionally invested in these characters than I’ve ever been before, simply through storytelling. Tonight, I am going to try to search for Janice’s sister online, I want to reunite them, I’m that invested. Floyd raising Animal, I had never thought about that but when you think about it, this seems to be like the true version that is correct to their storyline. Also, Floyd working at Jerry’s Guitars, as a Muppet Fan, things like that just makes the whole experience even more special, a tribute to Jerry Nelson, what a perfect way to acknowledge him. This reminds me, “Based on Characters By Jim Henson” it’s always nice when that’s included, another thing this show gets right, it respects the past, it’s not ashamed of it. Zoot, for the first time ever I think I know who Zoot is, these characters have been written and fleshed out so well and I would imagine Zoot (and probably Lips) must have been the hardest ones to accomplish this for and both turned out perfect. Lips, I have three Palisades variants of him, every time I used to look at my collection when I had them on display, I wondered, why are you standing there? Who even are you? But now, I truly feel most connected to Lips than any other band member, Janice comes very close. Most of the time when I speak, most people don’t understand what I’m saying, rainbows are visions but for those who do, I feel closest to them. The whole Lips mumbling thing, I didn’t think I was going to like that but it works. As a lifelong Muppet Fan if I didn’t truly know who Lips was after all these years and that change makes sense to me, then I’m sure it also applies for casual viewers too. Makes his past more interesting now if you like to think that the reason he barely ever spoke in the past was because he was embarrassed that nobody could understand him, so he spoke through his trumpet. After all these years thanks to inspiration from The Swedish Chef and Beaker he felt free to be himself and started speaking. Jumbles, mumbles, Mahna-Mahna, he doesn’t care if you don’t understand him, he’s going to speak anyway. I like how in return Lips doesn’t properly understand others either by always bringing the wrong person that’s been asked from him through communication issues. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">When Dr Teeth changes the name to “Just The Electric Mayhem”, how powerful, as a kid I remember thinking how unfair that it’s not just called “The Electric Mayhem” so the little kid in me really likes this development, I hope it sticks. Even though Dr Teeth is my favourite Electric Mayhem member, well was, Janice is very high on that list now, I can relate a lot with her. Dr Teeth now sounds more like Dr Teeth than ever before, his use of unique words, I never realized how important that aspect to the character was until I watched this show. This Dr Teeth makes me 100% feel as if Jim Henson is still here sharing himself hidden beneath the doctor. In one episode Dr Teeth’s parents show up, we get a fun story with Dr Teeth meeting Floyd, discovering his passion for music and disobeying his parent’s life plan for him in the dental industry to find himself and be happy with who he is. This is the kind of writing that makes one worthy to write for The Muppets, perfectly exampled by Fraggle Rock (2022) and Age of Resistance (2019). When a child watches this show, any show for that matter, it registers differently in them than it does in adults. They will be more easily lost, inspired and moulded by what they are watching. As they grow up, when life gets harder, when they must fight to discover who they are, silence others and listen to themselves, this little Electric Mayhem story will spark a memory in them and hopefully inspire them to do what’s right for themselves. This show is filled with this type of well-minded-moulding-musical-developing-storylines. It’s very clever if you can find the story hidden within the story, the one that speaks to our subconscious minds… can you picture that? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Janice, reminds me of Mokey and ironically has accomplished the same goal that the Fraggle Rock reboot accomplished with me too. It took a character who was fifth on my list and took them up to first place after the show. When I was little Mokey was my least favourite Fraggle, not including Lips this applied to Janice when it came to The Electric Mayhem. Now as I’ve grown older, I’ve become a spiritual hippie flower girl apparently and for some reason I really relate and like these characters now. Ironically, I’m not even purple, yellow, female, foam, no tail, no guitar skills, yet I can still relate to these characters. I can especially relate to Janice because I too am on a journey of self-healing, so I can write about whoever I want, Boo Disney, Yay Muppets. Floyd Pepper, I liked that he’s always been a bit of a conspiracy theorist, even notable in this show, that’s one wise Muppet. I like how Floyd and Janice’s relationship was handled, like always, their just happy being together, it works for them. Floyd finding the perfect words to ask for Animal’s forgiveness, so moving, very classic Muppet feel to it. Especially connecting it back to their origin story which had been set up a few moments earlier and I was eagerly anticipating at some point. Baby Animal, very enjoyable, the Muppet geek in me thinks “why not pink baby Animal?” The Muppet Fan in me justifies it by thinking this is a slightly older baby Animal after his fur turned red, yep that works for my Muppet mindset. Animal going on his job hunts, the character was handled very well, haven’t seen Animal this good in years, like Zoot and Lips, probably also one of the hardest characters to flesh out properly whilst keeping to their character traits set before. These things make the story more believable, unlike Gonzo’s mother being lost in the jungle or whatever in The Muppets (2015). I like this team of people who have brought this life into The Muppets, they truly understand what they are doing, how Muppets work, it needs more people like that, from the top of my head, I can think of two.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">What does all this mean for the future of The Muppets? A Muppet shared-Universe? To me that sounds very interesting, first because it’s a very clever way to expand and reignite The Muppet franchise and also I don’t want to see Kermit, at least not without Steve Whitmire. “Oh shut up about this already, it’s been years” some of you might be saying, to that I say, “shut up yourselves.” I’m not interested in just the puppets; I’m interested in the people who bring these characters to life. When I was little, Steve Whitmire, Frank Oz and Dave Goelz, those were what Star Wars fans might consider their Luke, Hans and Leia. Sadly, Disney failed Star Wars fans but for Muppet fans we’re still in time, I want to see that trio alongside the Muppets Mayhem team bringing The Muppets to life. The Muppet can be such a perfect and special thing, but without Steve Whitmire’s Kermit and Frank Oz’s Miss Piggy alongside the team, it’ll never reach its full potential. I’m a huge Muppet Fan but I haven’t been excited for anything Muppets since 2016, after Steve Whitmire was fired. This new Disney Kermit just takes me out of the illusion that this Muppet world I’m viewing on screen, following year after year, it’s not real anymore because of it, the illusion is broken when the right Kermit is not present. I’m not the only one who feels like this because after seven years all I see in the comments section, specifically on YouTube every time a new Kermit video pops up is how disappointing, bring back Steve Whitmire. This was never a problem before, everybody was happy with Kermit back in 2016, for the fan base, what is broken, what needs to be fixed, wake up Disney, play into the good parts of the story for once. As for Miss Piggy, forget the puppet, Frank Oz is Miss Piggy as long as he’s alive, bring back the original Pig. Who do fans need to smack to get this to happen, Steve Whitmire and Frank Oz, bring them back, brings Kermit and Mis Piggy back. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">I love Muppets Mayhem, it’s done for me what the Fraggle Rock reboot and Age of Resistance both accomplished in the past, this is all so magically entertaining. I want more solo Muppet projects but that doesn’t mean I want this Kermit and Miss Piggy problem not to be fixed, this is the most important thing that The Muppets need to accomplish in my opinion. Fix this, keep the exact team you have now and that wish everybody has for more classic nostalgic Muppets back on our TV screens, that’s exactly the moment that will start happening again. Muppets Mayhem shows us how this can be achieved even without Kermit and Miss Piggy but why not just fix everything, it makes the process more fun when what is broken is fixed. I want a Season 2, not so much because I always want more Muppets but rather because I’m invested in this storyline, will Moog and Nora get together? Will Hannah make a deep connection with Zoot or Lips and start dating one of them? Will the guest stars feel pride in what their doing, because it really comes across on screen if they don’t and it was clear here that they were all happy and grateful in their roles, can’t say the same thing for those singing celebrity skulls in Muppets Haunted Mansion. Will Dr Teeth and Penny work out? Will Floyd and Janice adopt a squirrel? Will Clifford make a comeback? Will Trumpet Lady make a cameo? Will The Electric Mayhem go on a Musical Muppet World Rock Tour if they manage to fix their bus? Will Animal join the dark side or the light side? Are we finally getting Electric Mayhem stuffed toys for our Muppet collections? So many questions, so many storylines, as a Muppet Fan I’m excited to see what’s next, haven’t felt like this when it comes to The Muppets in a long time.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Muppets Mayhem is pure Electric Mayhem.</span></div>MuppetsHensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13804397875703135346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7930620819375379067.post-51736512505619982132023-05-10T01:53:00.002-04:002023-05-10T01:53:25.063-04:00"The Muppets Mayhem" Album Cover Art<p>Here is the amazing cover art by Matt Taylor (@MattTaylorDraws) for "The Muppets Mayhem" vinyl</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Just like the Gelflings? Amazing, I love that, and Fraggle Rock is full of so many crystals. Did the Trash-Heap just introduce us to Junk City? Is Hoggle running around in there somewhere? Has the actual Labyrinth been walking distance from the Gorgs garden all these years? Doozer therapy sessions, Moon light dancing Mergelles, glowing Fraggle tails, Fraggles playing with a ball, that was beautiful, everything looks so good. This is an old fan’s way of thinking, but it is also important to get new fans interested too. With Puppets there is not so much movement as cartoons, it’s more talking, there has to be a joke every minute or so within the dialogue to keep kids’ attentions. The jokes through the series are timed and spaced out perfectly plus there very funny, I like this new edgier humour added into the show, it’s just truly amazing in all aspects. And it’s hilarious, I laughed out loud so many times, The Storyteller dancing is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen from The Muppets in general, I love that. The little “Happy New Day” Fraggle, “Oh please, call me Manty”, injured Doozers, “Map-Heads” sounds like Muppets, very clever, I wonder if that was intentional, I imagine it was. Sprocket’s reaction to Doc wanting to put his picture on the hero board made me laugh so much, so funny, so classic. Not only did this show take me back to childhood, it delivered all the emotions a perfect show should make you feel. Inspired, happy, laughter, sadness, fear, thoughtfulness, love, determination, it’s a beautiful ride of emotions for a brain, especially a young one in development.</span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kevrq5WVf8I" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></div><div><br /></div><div><div><span style="font-size: large;">The first episode alone, what puppetry/storytelling brilliance, best pilot episode for a revived classic show ever in my opinion. Not only does it follow the classic elements of Fraggle Rock perfectly, what it adds and updates it with is genius writing. The pilot episode, had it been a bit longer and released as a movie, I think it would have done really good, this is how good this show is. They do such a great job in introducing the characters and the Fraggle world all in one episode. Connecting the Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, Humans (Doc) and Sprocket to the water, amazing and very clever to add in the first episode, it connects them all. When the Fraggle five were falling down the waterfall, loved that, that is the kind of things I wanted added as a kid, stuff that in the 80’s couldn’t really be accomplished. Uncle Travelling Matt asking Gobo to come with him to outer space, then uninviting him, then inviting him again, how clever, what a brilliant way to adapt the storyline from the original pilot episode and give it more depth and layers, truly outstanding. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">I was immediately in love with this show as soon as it opened with “Party In Fraggle Rock” as much as I missed the original intro, I still thought this was a worthy replacement, it had won me over by basically changing the theme song, how is that possible? Still, I was so happy when it ended and we got the original intro, so clever to place it at the end in the first episode, it fits better there I believe. The intro starts in actual outerspace, not just Doc’s workshop window, takes it even further, love all these updates. The original Fraggle Rock intro is to catchy and iconic not to include, and when they sang that song at the end and it finished, I realized I had been entranced for the whole 30 minutes, just like when I was younger. This show had held my attention for 30 minutes and not once did I feel I was not in this world, not once did something throw me out of the illusion that I was exploring Fraggle Rock, those 30 minutes felt like 5 minutes. I’ve just watched the whole series in two days and I plan to watch the whole thing again this week and numerous times throughout my lifetime because this is truly worthy of the Jim Henson name. And then the last episode, all the Fraggles in the Gorgs garden, the song, the messages, is it just me or is this not the smartest children’s show that has premiered since the original back in the 80’s? A children’s show that does not speak down to kids and teaches them real values, is it me or is Fraggle Rock not the best at it in both shows? All the Fraggles carrying Junior’s plant at the end, Sprocket catching Uncle Travelling Matt, the water returning, the final shot, this is outstanding, they don’t make shows like this anymore. Best revived show I’ve ever seen, best Jim Henson production in years, the ongoing stories throughout the whole series, amazing, I really like that it’s serialized, the first one was, but this one makes it clearer.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PzFbeoirgvI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>
</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">The first episode made me think it was a reboot, since Uncle Travelling Matt found the hole into the workshop and this seemed to have been the first time. Second episode made me realize it was a continuation, I was a five-year-old kid again, when Uncle Travelling Matt mentioned he had come back to outerspace. Sprocket didn’t recognize the Fraggles, he now lives with a new Doc, Fraggle’s didn’t know what outerspace was, Junior and the Fraggles aren’t real friends from the start but at the same time, it also feels like a continuation. This is brilliant writing, I understand why some elements seem rebooted and some a continuation, focused on a new audience, respecting old fans, I think The Jim Henson Company is the best at doing this in Hollywood. But they have outdone themselves because they have accomplished both perfectly, a reboot and a continuation, both in one show, how is that even possible to write and create? The reveal of the Fraggle hole into the real world, Fraggles entering outerspace for the first time, today’s new audiences need these elements to connect to this world, they need to be part of the journey from the beginning to feel like they’re going along on a ride, this was the best way to do this. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">The way this series connects all the worlds, I think that’s my favourite part, as a child, I still remember how in awe I was when these worlds connected, when Doc finally met the Fraggles at the very end, that blew my mind. For old fans its fan service, for new fans, it’s mind blowing, it helps them believe Fraggles exists in their world too. It makes them believe somewhere in their house there might be a hidden Fraggle hole, that leads through Fraggle Rock into the unknown universe to be explored behind the Gorgs castle. That is what made me connect to the Fraggles and its messages so much as a kid, that belief that this was all real and the way this shows handles the connecting of these worlds is brilliant. When the Ditzies light up Fraggle Rock and then come out into the Gorgs garden through the well and light over Junior, that’s so beautiful. That’s the type of things I wanted to see as a little kid but as an adult now understand why I couldn’t have it, it just makes this whole world feel even more real now. You know how believing that the possibility of Star Wars could actually exist makes it even more special, that’s how I feel about Fraggle Rock. This is how kids today will feel, if this show can get kids to believe they can actually find a hole leading into the world of Fraggle Rock, this show has accomplished its job. And since it seems to have kept long-time fans drawn into this world, which is harder, I think that means this show has succeeded, how can it have not? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsbx91IwOrIIpxiBsPbLwOKRYVaYgEh6f3tcB3iPmw7ZmQrukO9utuCbmZeb9_WcTmHYdoXSjV22M-Pj7_v6o1MKSsDXi-ksxjc1ECILZCMNckqdx4sDv5Bx_M6ieZ1B3fEtnPu2ROgLY1T8Jy8MDky4juQESQlMSZ3LFS2lNz_SpNXaw4g0OyVEQ6gw=s1000" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsbx91IwOrIIpxiBsPbLwOKRYVaYgEh6f3tcB3iPmw7ZmQrukO9utuCbmZeb9_WcTmHYdoXSjV22M-Pj7_v6o1MKSsDXi-ksxjc1ECILZCMNckqdx4sDv5Bx_M6ieZ1B3fEtnPu2ROgLY1T8Jy8MDky4juQESQlMSZ3LFS2lNz_SpNXaw4g0OyVEQ6gw=s320" width="320" /></a></div>At one point, towards the middle of the series, I was on the edge of my seat for so long, the suspense was killing me. When Cotterpin Doozer spoke to Doc through the speaker I jumped up from my sofa, did that really just happen? Five-year-old me would have been thinking about that for days, these days probably the same. Then a few episodes later, Cotterpin Doozer comes across the entrance into outerspace and drives right through it, I hit my head on the ceiling. Then when I thought I couldn’t jump any higher, seconds later, the Trash-Heap reveals Junk City! Are Goblins stealing radishes from the Gorgs garden at night? Then before my excitement could come down from seeing that beautiful shot of Boober lost within a mountain of trash, we’re then taken back to Cotterpin Doozer walking on top of a sleeping Sprocket inside the workshop, I’ve been waiting years to see a Doozer get this far. When my excitement calmed down and I realized that there was a possibility that Doc would walk in, basically Doozers exposed to Humans I became so nervous, I was on the edge of my seat, as if I was watching a thriller movie. I’m so invested in this show, in this world, those nerves, those same nerves I would have had as a child if a Doozer was in a position to be exposed to a human, I still got those at 35 years old. I was sweating, moving nervously, at one point I even had to stand up, the suspense was too much, what a fun ride. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">For me the one thing I cherish most from growing up with Fraggle Rock is the messaging I received from it at such a young age. When the mind is being programmed, this is when these ideas should be inserted, for greater impact in the future, for that I am very grateful to Fraggle Rock (original). This new return Back To The Rock is just as powerful, strong and clever and this time around even more relevant and I think even braver. Teaching good lessons through fun entertainment is the best way to use television, Fraggle Rock is aimed at the younger crowd, whilst The Dark Crystal expands on those ideas but for a more modern audience and now the worlds seem to be colliding? The Jim Henson Company you are geniuses, caring for these properties for so long, to bring them back in this fashion, such a worthy investment for everybody involved, even the audience watching. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbEcjYC2pfpM_OqufF9wfRO6CWmZohK9YOIjPcEZvwQtu45wVE8uPPmQrvJzhYGEL30NJBUpDuBJp5ql5sZdkKq3XrSHFgX02_ZPzZXJtpMe_L4uljl7yzY0HaH2GBuafMw3mIbWQXJHnxdOELyUPKyfqpVvQ4KVVO6vrNPVmL1s6vjfgZcGXveQ9H6A=s1200" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1200" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbEcjYC2pfpM_OqufF9wfRO6CWmZohK9YOIjPcEZvwQtu45wVE8uPPmQrvJzhYGEL30NJBUpDuBJp5ql5sZdkKq3XrSHFgX02_ZPzZXJtpMe_L4uljl7yzY0HaH2GBuafMw3mIbWQXJHnxdOELyUPKyfqpVvQ4KVVO6vrNPVmL1s6vjfgZcGXveQ9H6A=s320" width="320" /></a></div>Fraggle’s meditate! That Mokey and Red meditation scene is a great example to explain everything so perfect with this show. It’s teaching such important, valuable lessons in such clever ways. Then we get Red’s version of what meditation is for her, so clever, so wise. Then Mokey and Red hold hands and meditate together that they are underwater, I never knew I had to see this, Fraggles swimming underwater, so beautiful. These are such good and strong messages to be teaching but in a fun way that is clever for adult viewers and just entertaining for children at that time. As they grow up, they realize how strong these messages are and since (even unknowingly to them) they can connect it through strong memories from their childhood, makes it easier for them to accomplish the goals they want for the life they wish, it’s all so deep. This is the power TV can have, especially on young minds, this is the beneficial way to use it, beneficial for the children. Wembley goes into Fraggle politics and it explains that aspect of life to kids, something not dealt as strongly in the original in my opinion, such clever writing. The episode facts vs intuition, how relevant and how perfect for Fraggle Rock, these are the messages they need to get across to their audience. The fact that they don’t make anyone on either side feel bad or in the wrong goes perfectly with the Fraggle Rock style of narratives, study both sides, that is the right answer, Fraggle Rock got it right, we can all learn from this show, children and adults. This is genius writing, this is Jerry Juhl writing talent, these writers truly have the at most respect from me. They all deserve to win writing awards, this kind of storytelling is not found anymore. “Nature healing nature”, that’s probably the cleverest thing I’ve ever heard, I wish that message was in my mind when I was little watching the original, this is so powerful. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Songs are a very important element to the Fraggle’s, not just good songs, clever songs, clever songs that make you think without realizing, same applies to the storytelling and on both fronts Fraggle Rock: Back to The Rock succeeded. Great storytelling and amazing music, luckily the soundtrack to the show is available for purchase, all the songs are so powerful, just like the original. </span><span style="font-size: large;">This new show features both old songs from the original and new songs, and all of them go together perfectly, the new ones are just as amazing, I especially like the last one. Music is very important and I like that many of the old songs were brought back, the words in those songs are just so powerful. </span><span style="font-size: large;">And the new songs, they’re also as powerful and just as beautiful, I can’t wait to listen to these over and over again.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"> <iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1HAegW4ya44" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>
</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">This new updated world is so true to the original, it feels so real and if it does for me, it certainly must for children. The best part is, all the things that “bothered” me as a child have been fixed. Something I really like, is the fact that it’s mentioned very early that the Doozers like that the Fraggles eat there Doozer constructions. As a kid I remember I found the Doozers boring and thought the Fraggles were bullies, the way they just ate their construction art and broke everything and then just didn’t seem to care. I remember my six-year-old mind actually thinking, I like the Fraggles but they’re so mean to the Doozers for no reason and I resented them a little, made me happy that Junior Gorg would terrify them, serves them right. Throughout the original, the Doozers on different occasions comment that they like that the Fraggles eat their constructions but for so long, I didn’t realize that. So, I’m glad this one fixes that problem by making it clear from the very start, very clever, I hadn’t even remembered that until watching the show over the weekend.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Fraggles and Doozer children, this makes me so happy, this is the kind of good, clever update a reboot should get. As a kid I wondered why the only Fraggle baby only appeared in the credits, we never saw any Fraggle children and I wondered why. Now in the reboot, the old fans are happy, because wanting something for so long, as silly as it might be, makes the whole thing more important, because you waited for it. This new generation will not have to wonder this, as an adult I just think it’s fun and handled correctly, as a kid it won’t make them question that aspect of this world, I know it will, this bothered me and my sisters a lot as we grew up, it wasn’t just me, where were the Fraggle children? A brighter Fraggle Rock, that’s something else I remember thinking of as a kid, I remember thinking it’s so much fun, so many colours but the caves are so dark, this new generation now get this bright, more colourful looking version, much easier to keep a young minds attention. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">That Mantor would have scared me so much as a kid watching Fraggle Rock, a good scare, an exciting one, one the original never really gave me. I always remember hoping to one day see the Fraggles get in real danger, the Gorgs terrified me but I knew they‘d never kill the Fraggles, this Mantor on the other hand, that would have scared the radishes right out of little six-year-old me, I truly believed the Fraggle were in real danger from an actual bad creature. When Red had her flashback to a previous episode, for a kid that is a memory that they also remember, makes them feel this is a journey they are on together, so I really like that, I know the effect it would have had on my imagination had I been five again. The fact that the storyline with the water is brought back every now and again, keeping the whole thing together as one long narrative, so clever, all the worlds connected, the storylines connected, it’s a journey, I’m so on board. The way the Fraggles now all run and escape in full view, it all looks so real, Gobo climbing out of Fraggle Rock and walking towards Junior, all the Fraggle running from Junior and hiding under the bridge, this all looks incredible and so realistic. You believe this world can exist, even as an adult, imagine a child’s mind growing up being influenced by these stories they believe are real. Connected to their world thanks to the Doc element of the show, that’s how it worked on my mind when I was little… and now too because the reboot succeeded in what it’s meant to do. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEji8khZBW0KQWgUi8NN5ns90GYToX0TlaimEoffx4c8tHPO0rEODsbWyCg4jWDUniodN_47xefxn3BjeKYGczFSJdHhG78K5jWRhW9kSdarKHUkhrpQJU11bl2xJyjz1l_itP3AAw0ND6JmTQdMQskMCylN6tU3iLD5QdgdIsAQ4-DSQHU4XArMAjX9sA=s1000" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="992" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEji8khZBW0KQWgUi8NN5ns90GYToX0TlaimEoffx4c8tHPO0rEODsbWyCg4jWDUniodN_47xefxn3BjeKYGczFSJdHhG78K5jWRhW9kSdarKHUkhrpQJU11bl2xJyjz1l_itP3AAw0ND6JmTQdMQskMCylN6tU3iLD5QdgdIsAQ4-DSQHU4XArMAjX9sA=s320" width="317" /></a></div>The characters, every single one of them is so special and so important to the Rock, so glad all the old favourites returned, and every single new one is very welcomed, especially the blue big Viking Fraggle, I want merchandise. I was able to stay in the illusion, all my friends returned, they didn’t seem like new puppets, they felt like old friends returning, that means The Jim Henson Company captured the magic. Gobo is perfect, so well recast, amazing, true leader of the Fraggles, it’s him, no question about that, that’s what I want to feel from these characters. If I had to make a list of my five favourite Muppets of all time, Mokey now makes that list, not the original Mokey, this one. That is hard to accomplish, not just a recast accepted, but a recast that has changed a list that has only been altered twice in my mind, once in the early 2000’s with Pepe and the early 2010’s with Uncle Deadly. Not only do I accept this recast, not only can she keep me in the illusion that she is Mokey, she’s raised so high on my list, where’s my haired-up Mokey merchandise? I thought I wouldn’t be able to believe this is Mokey, not until I saw her with her hair down, I was in the illusion within seconds of the first episode. Later on, we do see her with her hair down, and it did give me that childhood feeling all over again, I met Mokey twice this series, through the feelings I had from childhood reborn, Deja vu with an old friend twice. “Once a bird looked at me and I was like can I control birds now?” </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Karen Prell is Red, nothing has changed at all, from all of them, she’s the one that most makes me feel like the original Fraggle Rock adventures had just taken place days earlier within this timeline, that’s just Red hands down, the one that keeps me in the illusion the strongest. The more I grow up, the funnier I find Boober, the more I relate to him. As a kid I actually didn’t like Boober or Mokey for that matter, I found them boring but Boober he just didn’t belong, he just complained, he should just move to a cave of his own, that was my mentality as a kid. As an adult, I accept Boober so much, because I can relate just as much. This time around though, I don’t feel Boober gives off that vibe to young children, being an adult I’m not sure, but there’s more of a young mind fun likability to him this time around. Seeing as this is Dave Goelz, it’s also one of the strongest characters to keep me in the illusion that this world is real. Boober does not sound exactly like the Boober my child mind remembers, but it still sounds like Boober, I’m sure my voice has changed to since I last saw him so many years ago. Boober sounds like he’s just matured, his voice has changed slightly after all these years. Wembley, he’s grown up and matured a bit, that way he doesn’t feels different to me, that’s my mentality so I can stay in the illusion whilst watching this show. The new recast for Wembley is just as amazing as all the others. When it’s an original character it’s easier, when you’re doing an imitation of someone else’s character it’s even harder and he nails it, so very talented. The thing is I don’t want an imitation of Wembley, I want Wembley. Those Steve Whitmire Wembley noises, if I heard those, I’d get a feeling I missed out on this time around. Wembley was so good, I was able to stay in the illusion, though I had to pretend but I thought that was going to ruin the show for me, so grateful at how well Wembley was recast but I don’t want a recast, I want Steve Whitmire. As a fan from childhood, I want to feel every childhood emotion possible and as perfect as the show is, for me personally, Steve Whitmire’s Wembley would have made this so special, I just have no words to explain it. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">When I was little, I found Uncle Travelling Matt so funny yet interesting with how he observed the world, my little young brain was so proud that I was smarter than him, I could spot his mistakes when describing what human things are used for. Five-year-old me always hoped to either find a Fraggle hole or bump into Uncle Travelling Matt walking around whilst outside. As I grew up, I find him so entertaining, he’s been my favourite Fraggle for so long and in this new show not only did he return perfectly but I feel we got the closest to classic Jim Henson sketches in a long time. All his scenes in outerspace, so silly and Muppety. This actually applies to the whole show, it’s so Muppety, and certain scenes actually feel like sketches straight out from the original The Muppet Show, such as the song Fraggle Lagoon. “Scientific jargon… dry stuff meets wet stuff” Uncle Travelling Matt is hilarious, the whole series is, which is very clever, great writing, I am amazed at the writing staff. Uncle Travelling Matt now sends other stuff as opposed to just letters back to Gobo from outerspace, what a perfect update. The Uncle Travelling Matt segments are so clever and funny, he should have his own Tik-Tok Account.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sGaCXf3TXnQ" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>
</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">The Minstrel, handled perfectly, better than I ever thought possible, what a clever idea, I can get on board with this, especially because it’s the best way, when you think of the backstage situation. I was so eager to see how this character was handled, I actually expected him to be retired but deep down didn’t want that but knew that without Jim Henson I could not accept that character from anyone. Well turns out I can, the specific changes they made to the look and even the name, I as a fan facing that problem, this was the only way to fix that, they gave me what I didn’t even know was a possibility. I love that “Cantus” is in this show, the best way to bring this character back, this show did everything perfectly, I cannot stress that enough. So many returning faces such as the Storyteller, the World’s Oldest Fraggle, Large Marvin and so many new ones, I enjoyed all the new Fraggles all the way from Lyle to the big new Viking Fraggle and the mystical white-haired tail- glowing Fraggle. I’m so glad that this time around characters stick around, unlike the original they don’t disappear, as a child you have no idea how many creatures, I wished had stayed living inside Fraggle Rock, mostly because I felt sad that they were not there with everybody because the rest of the caves seemed so lonely. That’s another improved update I like from this new show, I really like that that the Fraggle species has been expanded on more this time around. We have more prominent different groups of Fraggles living within the caves such as the Mergelles and the day sleeping/dream living Fraggles, what a cool concept, great idea. This time around the caves don’t seem so empty, there’s more life, more Fraggles, there’ only two more Fraggle’s I’d like to see living in these caves. There needs to be a Steve Whitmire Wembley Fraggle and a new mean and grumpy Frank Oz Fraggle, this world needs a Frank Oz Fraggle. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgaHPNCr2lC_V0zZexKADZ_TTHfrljaG8-xV3HcPZ1FTlyFI2jj_AKZA6Z_Bt9zb1UR1zMf__7fQiTMTEIa6rKwV6nmtKowxcKReZ8bBpSARCi-GFjfnq6rxVnDuHh8FXAdr2W1HKEhare2Vzj7S23rTsoC60NnoZ8pkjmH6ZxnlbVp40lGrn0hxv8UAQ=s726" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="726" data-original-width="715" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgaHPNCr2lC_V0zZexKADZ_TTHfrljaG8-xV3HcPZ1FTlyFI2jj_AKZA6Z_Bt9zb1UR1zMf__7fQiTMTEIa6rKwV6nmtKowxcKReZ8bBpSARCi-GFjfnq6rxVnDuHh8FXAdr2W1HKEhare2Vzj7S23rTsoC60NnoZ8pkjmH6ZxnlbVp40lGrn0hxv8UAQ=s320" width="315" /></a></div>The Trash-Heap scared me so much when I was little, more so than the Gorgs, this time around, I don’t think she comes across as scary. Marjory The Trash-Heap was the only one that really through me off, the voice is so different but still somehow, I managed to stay in the illusion, she felt like the pile of trash I grew up with. The Trash-Heap feels exactly the same, she just sounds and looks younger, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Trash-Heap ages backwards. Philo and Gunge seem completely the same, I really like those two characters, I remember when one almost got eaten on Dinosaurs, that was so frightening for me when I was little. The new Doc, she had some pretty big shoes to fill, that’s not your workshop, that’s not your dog, but she immediately won me over. She’s even worthy of the name Doc, I really like that the actress treats Sprocket like a real Dog (just like Gerry Parkes did) and not a puppet. She also doesn’t speak down, or act as if she’s in a children’s show, she plays the part respectfully, which adds so much, because for children she is their main connection into this world. Perfect casting for a new Doc, I’m fine with her moving in, being Sprocket’s new owner and even taking the name Doc, it was all handled so well. Sprocket, I know that is not Steve Whitmire, it bothers me but since Sprocket doesn’t “speak”, it’s so easy to fall into the illusion and that for me is definitely Sprocket, although I know it’s not. The Doozers have been updated even better than I could have imagined, the new technology, their funnier, not as boring, makes me want to watch episodes from the Doozer animated show and even hunt down vintage Doozer toys on Ebay. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Junior Gorg’s introductions in the first episode, walking out like a huge scary intimitading monster, only to immediately be distracted and goofy, then chasing the Fraggles in the garden, best thing I’ve ever seen. The new modernized chase scenes look so real, it’s beautiful to watch. When Junior Gorg stood up to his father to protect the Fraggles right to their water, so amazing. Although this is a recast, which I always knew would have to be the case and even though he looks quite different from the original, less scary looking, it still feels like Junior Gorg. We’ve seen Fraggles return here and there every now and again, Doozers got their own animated spinoff show, The Muppets and Sesame Street never left, but the Gorgs, they hadn’t been seen since 1987! So Ma and Pa Gorg are hand puppets right? I was wondering throughout why they didn’t come out of the house, it wasn’t until I really focused that I saw the difference in size between them and Junior Gorg, you can’t even tell, I was just specifically looking out for this. I laughed because I felt silly that I had not realized earlier, I was lost in this world, I forgot it was a show, and was not thinking of the behind-the-scenes stuff, I was focused on what’s on screen. If that happened to me, you can be sure children will definitely be lost in that world. I remember as a kid watching Dinosaurs, thinking if they have so many different Dinosaurs why do they only use the same ones over and over again as different characters? Eventually I realized the other Dinosaurs were hand puppets, but when your lost in that world, as if it is real, that’s not even an option, that’s what this new generation gets to experience now. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjvymPvOAlmLCSB4Sjdf1W0K3w-2CK7Nj3IzV-2Aw8L6bdl1F4mq8odi3zdjWlAy4Sidk6DvDHQYQcAiuCDaFrmv_xtzHTEYJx625_-9zIx7TP_fSRYTXhlVf4OmlQmth27xOjy_cr5z5e3Aly4D55wBBmS1reUMHsmcUz9EB7uVLnW5HrXDbXMkiDDbg=s1080" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="727" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjvymPvOAlmLCSB4Sjdf1W0K3w-2CK7Nj3IzV-2Aw8L6bdl1F4mq8odi3zdjWlAy4Sidk6DvDHQYQcAiuCDaFrmv_xtzHTEYJx625_-9zIx7TP_fSRYTXhlVf4OmlQmth27xOjy_cr5z5e3Aly4D55wBBmS1reUMHsmcUz9EB7uVLnW5HrXDbXMkiDDbg=s320" width="215" /></a></div>Trees with lights, that’s exactly the kind of things that should make up this part of their world, so clever. I really like that there’s more life in the Gorg garden now, I love the talking plants. I want to live in that garden, I want Fraggles running around, talking plants, light up trees, what a beautiful world to visit, glad this team was able to take us back there after all these years. The Jim Henson Company is amazing at reviving their old properties, they do it exactly perfectly as it should be done. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance that premiered on Netflix in 2019 is another Masterpiece, which in my mind, is the same world in which Fraggle Rock is based on, so what an amazingly cared for Henson Universe they have created. A story is being told to different generational age groups, all through different properties, telling their own story, but combined telling an even bigger one. As a child grows up watching and learning from the Doozer Animated show, they can then continue learning that message at a more advanced level through Fraggle Rock and as they keep on getting older they can discover the worlds and messaging’s of The Dark Crystal and, Labyrinth, The Story Teller, it’s all connected. It’s one long ongoing story, developing at the same age pace as their audience, genius. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">This new series is so spectacular, in my mind, it deserves a standing Fraggle ovation, this has all been perfectly accomplished.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5BMB-s2BUww" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">by Nicholas Napoli </span></div><div><br /></div></div></div></div>MuppetsHensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13804397875703135346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7930620819375379067.post-19302195117811791272022-01-24T19:30:00.002-05:002022-01-24T19:32:06.646-05:00Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock - A Non-Spoiler Review by Nicholas Napoli <span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEglrMXH-BwEPm6i71Dfja7-rgTgZOPtyQPD8TiCVsMOVWd793JYT4y7tY4YVXBx4wUvZo4TUFBnFQ_d_01jwLweWpWLK2PyLwy5IX8GKGQma-LF_67rJofP64a66oZVUjdlmw63z0l3PwWx_S0iyUr2S8cgRoYUS8ud76zMz163xA8I4oze1uJNYxRXjQ=s305" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="200" data-original-width="305" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEglrMXH-BwEPm6i71Dfja7-rgTgZOPtyQPD8TiCVsMOVWd793JYT4y7tY4YVXBx4wUvZo4TUFBnFQ_d_01jwLweWpWLK2PyLwy5IX8GKGQma-LF_67rJofP64a66oZVUjdlmw63z0l3PwWx_S0iyUr2S8cgRoYUS8ud76zMz163xA8I4oze1uJNYxRXjQ" width="305" /></a></div>Amazing! Fraggle Rock is beautiful, not only is this the best revived show I’ve ever seen, it’s just one of the best series I’ve ever watched period, this is Jim Henson’s Muppets. This is truly worth the wait, what a masterpiece, from everything original to everything updated, everything is perfect. The characters, the writing, the sets, the designs, the energy, the pace, the humour, everything is just exactly what I’ve always hoped for from an updated version of Fraggle Rock, ever since I started watching as a three-year-old kid for the first time. This is a perfect example of how to revive a show and I’m going to explain why and to do so, I’m going to revisit my six-years-old Fraggle obsessed self as we review Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock. </span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEifKr_42AgO4E1ZQ6bZQnRzv-YB7zK449FmXjMk7yCZneDRWN6e0f442yy_-JVApWzRJitafriZf_1aW_ZS_1Aim2qc0pNQ4O03FwHCpPj6nw8Ud3V7iO-Jvg54S2NsCD_mF29sigfxNOaHu9TQrole9hkeProwD4i5c97BkjNNvDEZLUo71PVEmHhruA=s1820" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1820" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEifKr_42AgO4E1ZQ6bZQnRzv-YB7zK449FmXjMk7yCZneDRWN6e0f442yy_-JVApWzRJitafriZf_1aW_ZS_1Aim2qc0pNQ4O03FwHCpPj6nw8Ud3V7iO-Jvg54S2NsCD_mF29sigfxNOaHu9TQrole9hkeProwD4i5c97BkjNNvDEZLUo71PVEmHhruA=s320" width="320" /></a></div>I already know this is going to be a long review, there is so much to praise and so much to highlight as to how to do these reboots/continuations correctly, whilst still pleasing everybody that needs to be taken into account for, so an audiences doesn’t just stay its original size, it expands without excluding. This is what I like about The Jim Henson Company, they’re giving us Jim Henson’s Muppets, his philosophies, his ideas, this feels like it’s been written by Jim Henson himself, Jerry Juhl too, do you know how difficult that is to achieve? It’s the most Muppety thing I’ve ever seen as an adult, since I was a child. This does everything perfectly, every aspect from on screen to off screen that it’s supposed to accomplish it does, every goal it should achieve, it reached them all with flying colours. Hollywood in general needs to pay attention to this, this is genius storytelling with excellent relevant messaging, just as clever as the original, just as worthy of the Fraggles and the name Jim Henson. This team, everyone involved, they have to stick together and remain doing this, I truly can’t believe this exists, the world needs Fraggle Rock right now, this team has actually taken us there. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">One of the things that just made the icing on the cake for me watching all 13 of these episodes over the weekend, is that I went into this show spoiler free. I had no idea who to expect or what to expect, other than the trailer, I had seen nothing. And that is exactly how you should see it, if you haven’t watched it yet, trust me it adds to the fun of the ride and it’s so worth it. I’m going to start by giving a spoiler-free review of the show in general and give examples of why I feel this is the perfect example of how to revive a show. One which keeps old fan’s happy and invested in the illusion of this world, they are welcomed along for the ride and cherished for their over thirty-five- year investment in the original. Whilst at the same time bringing in new characters, modern concepts and updated ideas that work because they make sense within this world. There’s an inner child within all of us, which most of us think we’ve outgrown but the truth is it’s always there, as we grow up, it’s just harder to keep in contact with. That’s what fans want to find when our childhood memories are brought back to us as adults in an updated modern revival. We don’t just want to have fun, we want to revisit our childhoods and escape into that world and if the world doesn’t feel the same, we don’t get that feeling we crave as lifelong fans, adult escapism back into childhood. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">MuppetsHenson will post my spoiler review sometime soon, where I’ll be able to properly highlight and give examples of how reboots should be done. How to help past properties keep growing for future seasons whilst always reaching new fans along the way and never losing old ones using spoilers to show examples. This show not only deserves a Season 2, 3, 4 etc… it also deserves to win so many awards, the way it handles deep subjects with profound messages told so entertainingly with clever, fun, creative storytelling, just as valuable as the original. This show is doing exactly the job it’s supposed to do throughout the whole 13 episodes, brilliant storytelling, all just so clever, this feels so much like Fraggle Rock, it’s been there this whole time.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/H21eTqk9BP8" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>
</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock — Official Trailer | Apple TV+ - YouTube I also want to review this show through the eyes of an old fan (adult) and young fan (child), what is good for old fans, means this is what the children watching the original grew up wanting, that means the show went in the right direction, the direction it taught them. If the old fans are happy, this means you have drawn them back into this world, if you can draw back the old fans, by making them feel like their childhood world with their old friends is back, then you can definitely make new fans feel like this is a world they can actually be part of. As adults we consider it fan service, but as children we consider it real, I was twenty-five years old when I finally realized the possibility of finding a Fraggle hole in someone’s house wasn’t something that could actually happen. That’s why I also want to focus on fan service in my review, it can also be seen as the key to making this world seem like a world that could actually exist within our reality, at least in the minds of children. I think I was six, maybe even seven when I finally realized The Muppets weren’t really walking around Hollywood, as much as I learned to play guitar, I could never really join The Electric Mayhem. Star Wars comes to mind, until this day, that scenario could exist in space somewhere in a galaxy far, far away. But since I grew up with Muppets not Star Wars, the world of Fraggle Rock is the one my childhood mind is most connected too, the one I’m most passionate about. If Gobo came back as a grumpy Fraggle who had lived a bad life all these years, if Boober, Wembley and Red never shared the screen together, if Mokey went to outerspace with Uncle Travelling Matt and started to fly, I would have been disappointed. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">But no I was a lucky devoted fan, I got exactly what I wanted as a lifelong fan, what I had waited for all these years, The Jim Henson Company delivered, I’m so proud of them. Not just because of what they delivered, they went against what somehow seems to be considered “unpopular” these days in some places. Some would call it catering to the fans, that’s not it at all, it’s continuing the expansion and return to this world in a way that makes sense, so the illusion that this is all real can continue, the escapism we crave as adults can be delivered, only if we can lose ourselves in the illusion. The Jim Henson Company accomplished the right things by doing what might be considered the unpopular thing by others, they did the right thing over the wrong thing, even if the majority aren’t doing it. I love that, because that is the Jim Henson spirit, this is how you continue his legacy, not just with his creations but by his teaching and the companies’ actions, this series succeeds at so many things, on so many levels, a real masterpiece. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhJDPC8LLfkkqLVn55EGVLnkgsrw5UtvHaA-grcJfLn_bF5yLtQtTrvkc01iM7SCKC5jQyQyP2ko5hoULb-ZjP5x1TjaOPbwr8kRwAcEnI47P_f-JZ-tbyKQ9dJgWwLULw9sprEPO9Kdwaox7iW2kHJM1-6LQcg4t5RHAHmMRk8YssN2vCOz9uy3YmVLg=s689" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="689" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhJDPC8LLfkkqLVn55EGVLnkgsrw5UtvHaA-grcJfLn_bF5yLtQtTrvkc01iM7SCKC5jQyQyP2ko5hoULb-ZjP5x1TjaOPbwr8kRwAcEnI47P_f-JZ-tbyKQ9dJgWwLULw9sprEPO9Kdwaox7iW2kHJM1-6LQcg4t5RHAHmMRk8YssN2vCOz9uy3YmVLg=s320" width="297" /></a></div>In my opinion I even think this show explains how to handle “wokeness” properly, to the point that the “woke” label can be detached from it and used by its correct term: logical and clever values to install through creative storytelling that makes sense. This series deals with strong subjects told in Fragglish fashion appropriate for kids, important topics yet it’s done the right way. Meaning it doesn’t turn into “woke nonsense”, it feels like logical lessons and values to have, that’s when it’s done the right way. Fraggle Rock teaching kids how to be woke the right way, the sensible way, that way when they grow up, they’ll know better and might not have to go through what we all have these past few years. My definition of woke is trying to achieve/teach something logical and valuable in a senseless and immature manner that actually hurts the message, not because the message is bad, but because people are being conditioned to associate that behaviour with anger and irritability, frustrated with something that should not be so difficult to accomplish without tainting the message or destroying the escapism. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">For example, a strong female lead character or two is very important, but needs to be done right, if not you just frustrate the viewer with that concept. They fear the quality of storytelling it is attached too; they fear the belittling of other beloved characters to raise up the strong female character. They might begin to hope for a male character, not because they don’t want a strong female character, but rather because they are scared it will not be portrayed well/realistically and will spoil their escapism within the story. When can I buy Mokey and Red figures? When can I buy Gobo, Boober and Wembley figures? I respect all five, none were dumbed down to make others smarter, everyone was just smart and good in their own unique ways. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRwBDoZ4Aj_BtBYRxhgDeLuYjjuthqID9EngsH1amH_-5ByrRWnkjBZmds1rxCo4v2EV9W3edDW-LP8dSrXynkPKtQJsYqBM4o7m81RgpFpH0VzXLXTP-Wyr7U0bRdEgFoSMrAqy39K2Zf56QCSItRYXRn4Sc0Rpj_NxsaZ_wXdPVoRC_Fo6u7h3VSAg=s1200" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1198" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRwBDoZ4Aj_BtBYRxhgDeLuYjjuthqID9EngsH1amH_-5ByrRWnkjBZmds1rxCo4v2EV9W3edDW-LP8dSrXynkPKtQJsYqBM4o7m81RgpFpH0VzXLXTP-Wyr7U0bRdEgFoSMrAqy39K2Zf56QCSItRYXRn4Sc0Rpj_NxsaZ_wXdPVoRC_Fo6u7h3VSAg=s320" width="319" /></a></div>Give me a green Fraggle, a blue Fraggle, a yellow Fraggle, give me any colour, I relate to all of them. I wonder why there is never any red coloured Fraggles? They must look scary? I can’t imagine what other reason there could be for never having red Fraggles? Is it important that we don’t know the Gorgs religion? No. Is it important that we don’t know the Trash-Heap’s sexual preference? No. Is it important that the Doozers didn’t tackle racism? No. The subject does not have to be handled literally in a show aimed for children, though Fraggle Rock does get the message of racism across throughout the whole series, even if one doesn’t realize it, their brain does. This also applies when you were little watching the original, even if you didn’t realize at the time, you were learning very valuable lessons for later on life. I know I didn’t realize as a child, but as an adult, I now understand what it was teaching me, and I value it, I think it’s good morals, teachings and lessons to live by. I’m so glad this show succeeds in getting this part right, I think is might be the most important aspect, the true magic of Fraggle Rock. It teaches the lessons schools should be teaching, the ones they don’t teach, how to understand yourself first before anything else, how to see the bigger picture. Between Fraggle Rock (philosophy/spiritualism) and Sesame Street (facts/education), I think that’s the best combined full education a child can receive to get them ready for life, those two shows together is how a school system should be created and balanced. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhM2zoArrbcRxfqDSx9S8TNMmog2du816iuOMx_DPOYDLEd43aIxvLlHG2xy7h72-IdUGhQ9kms95UurNGx6aD3-ys5OHLSactE1msMf67QNSEZfCDtTgDEUGwp6OR123Fp3vU_7qLdkxKu3R7yCM1nG851Xcrxs8la7Rd8jC0YvFeQH3Kv72dL3DVuSw=s2048" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1362" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhM2zoArrbcRxfqDSx9S8TNMmog2du816iuOMx_DPOYDLEd43aIxvLlHG2xy7h72-IdUGhQ9kms95UurNGx6aD3-ys5OHLSactE1msMf67QNSEZfCDtTgDEUGwp6OR123Fp3vU_7qLdkxKu3R7yCM1nG851Xcrxs8la7Rd8jC0YvFeQH3Kv72dL3DVuSw=s320" width="213" /></a></div>This perfect return to Fraggle Rock has managed to succeed in so many ways, but especially for life long fans of Jim Henson’s work. The children who grew up watching classic Jim Henson Muppets because I’m one of them and this show gets everything right in my mind. When I was little, I could completely lose myself in these Muppet worlds, every production I saw, be it Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Christmas Toy, Emmet Otters Jug Band Christmas, they were all perfect, I could not find a single fault. From around 1999 onwards, after Muppets From Space, that feeling became very hard to come across. Not that I don’t like the new stuff, but liking it and getting that childhood feeling back is two different things for me, if I like it great, but if it takes me back to my childhood, that’s what I’m really after. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">The Muppets (2011) and Muppets Haunted Mansion come extremely close to this for me, though with Steve Whitmire’s absence, The Muppets can never give me the feeling Fraggle Rock has given me this weekend, even with Steve Whitmire’s absence from the Rock, I’ll tackle that part in the spoiler review. I really like It’s A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, The Muppets (2015), Muppets Most Wanted, I can watch these on repeat, like I do with the classic Muppets that came before it but that feeling, the one I look for in a Jim Henson production, that’s rare to come across without Jim Henson and most of his original team not there. Although I have to stress, had it not been for Steve Whitmire’s absence, Muppets Haunted Mansion would have succeeded in giving me that feeling that this new Fraggle show has given me. It’s one thing to get certain things right at different times, it’s another to get them all right at the same time and so perfectly, that is what gives fans the Jim Henson magic from their childhood that they’re after, at least in my case. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">I was thirteen when Muppets From Space premiered in movie theatres, the years after I just assumed I had grown out of that feeling, that feeling where I was lost in Jim Henson’s Muppet worlds. That feeling where you just want to buy merchandise based on what you’ve watched, watch the episodes over and over again. I hadn’t grown out of that, because now at thirty-five I’ve experienced that exact Jim Henson magic I’ve been craving all these years. Lots of productions throughout the years have come close, but this show, for me personally, this takes the radish cake. The Muppet Show, Muppet specials from the 50-90’s, The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets From Space, Muppets Tonight, Follow That Bird, Fraggle Rock (original) and Dinosaurs. When it comes to Jim Henson property productions, those are my holy grails. Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock is the first time, I’ve ever felt I could add something to that list in my adult life. I feel as if I have watched something that Jim Henson himself specifically helped to produce, it has the Jim Henson magic, as a fan that is what I’m looking for. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEirF04KJ0KJqRaU_vZOrlmPoH1mGKmpEq1eRLHX1efSIHPLiumtf9ZyQoLvZ4vLdWa2CcMCS-1PcMqivMnquDCDMDjtSOfB5gsFDLN39ErS2fYwvpL-WivZfp4NROhiaX-3ePtz-jL5aAviw0M8YJ_QH9i0fcQDqIOd-drk3-Wv2IktyFFjBpjJ-kBQ6g=s1080" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="729" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEirF04KJ0KJqRaU_vZOrlmPoH1mGKmpEq1eRLHX1efSIHPLiumtf9ZyQoLvZ4vLdWa2CcMCS-1PcMqivMnquDCDMDjtSOfB5gsFDLN39ErS2fYwvpL-WivZfp4NROhiaX-3ePtz-jL5aAviw0M8YJ_QH9i0fcQDqIOd-drk3-Wv2IktyFFjBpjJ-kBQ6g=s320" width="216" /></a></div>Credit where credit is due, before we went Back To The Rock, there was another new Henson show recently that also joins that category for me, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019) series on Netflix. That is another masterpiece, brilliant, clever storytelling, it deserves all the praise I’ve given Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock. It accomplishes all the same goals but at a different age level, and in the same perfect way as this new show, getting all elements right and accomplishing all its goals. Since I did not have deep connections with The Dark Crystal characters throughout my childhood, as I did with The Muppets, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock characters, they don’t give me that same magic childhood feeling I get from these when they return so perfectly as they have with this new Fraggle Rock show. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">In my opinion the hardest thing for a reboot to accomplish, is not just being perfect, it’s getting not just old fans, but new fans too, to want to invest into watching the original either again or for the first time. Double, triple, Doozer bonus points, if the reboot is able to add a new experience, when watching the original that came out many years earlier. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is the best example of that for me, I love that show, but was so eager to watch the original movie again, now having this new understanding to the story. And after over thirty years, my viewing experience of something I already loved was improved and I didn’t even think that was possible. That is a perfect example of a reason why a reboot should be merited on going forward or not, excitement for the future, greater appreciation for the past, that’s its main goal. Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock, makes me want to watch it again, followed by the original series, A Muppets Family Christmas, The Fraggles Look For Jobs, The Dark Crystal, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock again and again, that’s actually what I’m going to do. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" iframe="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zSV42j8lccg" style="font-size: large;" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zSV42j8lccg" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe> </div></span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">A good reboot should also want to make you buy merchandise, I want it all, I want more than what I can spend! I want Glowing Tail Fraggle Plush Toys, Gorg Funkos, Doozer Construction Sets with lights, a real dog called Sprocket, Trash-Heap pyjamas, I want all the characters. Honestly, I just feel like buying Fraggle Rock merchandise, all of it, growing up I just wanted Fraggle Rock merchandise and it was so hard to come by and I still want it. I want action figures of all the characters, not just the main ones, all of them, the secondary characters, the new characters, that speaks volumes for this show. One thing is to get fans excited with the old cast but introducing new characters, getting the balance right, getting each new character so perfect and likable right from the get go. To the point that they are part of an old fan’s merchandise list too, that’s when the show has accomplished all it’s goals. If like me you want new Fraggle Rock merchandise, don’t forget, sometime around March new Fraggle plush toys are being released:<a href="https://toywiz.com/fraggle-rock-1/" target="_blank"> <b>Fraggle Rock Funko POP!, Plush Toys & Collectibles (toywiz.com) </b></a></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj4_lBe2CfkwfszlVKnswBTfxhbePho2FgIBhk_G2cB1dut8Kuc1YT_ooF8M_RyxPsemu9Dk_VJUyxecWSe69EwUGFDhnxBdYW5DtaJ9BerkoQhukf8nZSSNdNpWMsscZAqzwCdyw5UlnWDP1SgP2TKadr4owOZR_2g5fV0Chu5vO_aayKS7lcRNKspcQ=s2048" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj4_lBe2CfkwfszlVKnswBTfxhbePho2FgIBhk_G2cB1dut8Kuc1YT_ooF8M_RyxPsemu9Dk_VJUyxecWSe69EwUGFDhnxBdYW5DtaJ9BerkoQhukf8nZSSNdNpWMsscZAqzwCdyw5UlnWDP1SgP2TKadr4owOZR_2g5fV0Chu5vO_aayKS7lcRNKspcQ=s320" width="320" /></a></div>Come back soon for our spoiler review, where I’ll continue this review but using actual examples from characters and episodes in this reboot. Since I was a little kid, the show I’ve most wanted to see brought back is Fraggle Rock, more so than The Muppets. The Muppets have never gone away, and every now and again tell us a new fun story, but Fraggle Rock is one long narrative that has so much meaning and is so powerful, I think 2022 will be exactly the perfect time to bring the message of Fraggle Rock back to screens. I’m interested in this show, not just as a fan who wants to see this story continued but also its effects on people, especially children. I grew up watching Fraggle Rock obsessedly since I was very little, I always thought it was all so colourful but hoped for brighter colours and settings, this new series gives that, I’m so excited to watch this. Ditzies! We get Ditzies! Fans notice this stuff and I for one love it, modernized Doozer vehicles with lights travelling under the construction! This is exactly how I’d pictured and hoped a return to Fraggle Rock would look like. I’m so excited, are we getting Sprocket? How will Doc’s replacement be written into the story? Will poor Sprocket have to prove Fraggles are real all over again for a second time? Or is there a new element now with Fraggles interacting with humans, slowly gaining their trust as they did with the Gorgs in the original? The Gorgs! I really hope they’re back, how do their modernized looks compare to the original? Will we finally be getting Gorg 6” Funko flocked figures? I’m so excited for all this, everything about it, I think it’s all perfectly done. </span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">When the trailer first came out, I couldn’t believe my eyes, the picture art alone had me eager to press play and I did and I found it amazing. Not just the show, that feeling, the childhood excitement that we all felt as children, every time we zoomed in through the window, into the workshop, towards the Fraggle hole and through it until we came upon Gobo who guided us into Fraggle Rock during the theme song. That feeling of déjà vu nostalgia that takes you back to your childhood days watching the original and nothing else was happening around you. After I watched it, about ten times, I then stopped and decided I wasn’t going to watch it again, I enjoyed it, I’m eager to watch the show, but enjoying it so much was bothering me. Steve Whitmire, he’s the only element missing from this fantastic new rebuilt world of the Fraggles, though I still plan to watch this because there is no way I will not watch. I began to read the comments, honestly, I wanted to see if there was anything about Steve Whitmire or Wembley in the comment sections. Most everybody dislikes the new Mokey and the digital backgrounds are not liked by many, I actually don’t have a problem with this, in fact I think I prefer these changes, I really like them. As I read the comments, I was happy, Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock was not getting the praise it deserved, why was I happy? Deep down the Steve Whitmire thing bothers me so much, I feel bad for liking and planning to watch the show and subconsciously having hatred towards the new show that I was happy to see negativity around it. How is that way of thinking on my part in the spirit of Fraggle Rock? How can I be so excited for something yet still not feel passionate about it like the original? When everything about this new version is perfect, except for the emptiness of Steve Whitmire’s absence.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Mokey, I always felt like she was more mature, older than the other four Fraggles, I didn’t like that for one reason. I preferred to believe the Fraggle five were all blank slates learning together, alongside it’s audience, all at the same time, nobody had an advantage over anybody else. This is why when Cantus randomly appeared or the Trash Heap gave advice it was so important and valuable, not just for the Fraggles but the viewers too. I like that this new Mokey seems younger, more aged like the others. I guess she started wearing her hair up and stopped eating Fraggle Berries, she looks younger and more alert, hopefully she won’t be excluded from merchandise as much now. I do hope that sometimes Mokey lets her hair down, or maybe seeing her tie up her hair as they talk amongst themselves. Sounds silly, but it would make it easier to feel the illusion that this is our Mokey returning after many years. A new Mokey, who we’re seeing transform at times in front of us into this new haired up version with wider eyes, which is still her and not an updated version of the puppet. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">As for the digital backgrounds, I like them, though I do understand why others don’t, I hope we do get some more natural cave settings, as I think has been confirmed we will. What I like about this new technology, although it might not be as familiar as fans would like, is the fact that it allows the Fraggles to explore more places, especially the Gorgs garden. What’s beyond the Gorgs garden? Could the Gorgs and Fraggles venture out further away from the castle? Could they explore more areas within the caves? Could they explore new locations the tunnels lead into? So many more possibilities are now available for these characters, that has me so excited. The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance was incredible, added so much to the original movie, like Fraggle Rock another long narrative being told and I also think it came back at the perfect time. As good as Age of Resistance was, Netflix decided not to renew season two, budget costs. I hope the budget for Fraggle Rock is kept as low as possible, so that we don’t stay wanting a season two we won’t get. Hopefully Fraggle Rock will get many seasons, it definitely deserves it, maybe if it succeeds The Dark Crystal’s long narrative can continue to be told with a season two on Apple TV+. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Wembley from Fraggle Rock: Rock On was good, Wembley from the Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock teaser also seemed good. Nothing against the two separate guys performing them, they both seem to do a good job, I hope these performers get their own characters to build up within the world of Fraggle Rock. Even though these are good Wembley’s, it’s not Steve Whitmire’s Wembley. To me if a performer passes away or steps down it feels like the hand inside the puppet, the soul, has had to leave and now all that’s left is a lifeless puppet, who becomes retired but only for a certain amount of time. With time, having a new performer, a new hand, a new soul revive that character is welcomed, needed, accepted and the illusion can continue. When the performer is forcibly removed, when that hand, that soul has been taken away and brought back by another immediately, I can’t connect with that character. I can’t fall into the illusion that these are real characters that I have followed since childhood, my friends. I feel like I’ve betrayed not so much the performer, but rather the character, I know this sounds silly but the whispers coming out from the hole in my kitchen are telling me that this makes a lot of sense. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Imagine if Steve Whitmire were allowed to be part of the series, at this point only voicing over Wembley for the first season and returning to bring Wembley to life in future seasons. What strength, what power that would give to this new show, outside of the story there would be special meaning of a real-life experience fans can connect to with the show. How much more popular could this show be with headlines announcing “Steve Whitmire returns to The Henson Company”. I’ll watch the show no matter what, but adding Steve Whitmire, as a fan to me, that would add so much value to this show being everlasting in my mind alongside the original. There would be so much meaning surrounding this new series, so much joy, so much happiness. The Henson fandom is divided, this could fix that, the fandom repaired, everything and everybody slowly coming back together alongside a new Fraggle Rock series, how powerful. It could probably fix so much if Steve Whitmire were included with the Fraggles, it’s the last thing missing in my opinion.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/993_k1z31ew" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>

Muppets Haunted Mansion killed most of The Muppets and still felt like one of the most Muppetiest productions I’ve seen since Disney purchased The Muppets back in 2004. We got Gonzo, Pepe, Sam the Eagle, Pops, Uncle Deadly, Johnny Fiama, Sal, Chip, Walter, Robin, Dr Phil Van Neuter, Howard Tubman, Beverly Plume, Joe the Legal Weasel, so many Muppets. As much as I like to believe that all these characters worked together offscreen, to get Disney to greenlight this scary idea of theirs, that’s not the case. There are people under those characters and behind those cameras and today I have the pleasure of interviewing one of them. Bill Barretta brings life to Dr. Teeth, Rowlf, Swedish Chef, Mahna-Mahna, Pepe, Bobo Bear, Big Mean Carl, Bubba Rat, Howard Tubman and today he has taken the time to answer some of my Muppet Haunted Mansion Fan questions! </span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(1) Bill could you explain how this whole process comes about, especially when at the beginning everybody was in lockdown. How does an idea get turned into a special on Disney+ during a lockdown? Does one approach Disney with just an idea or more of a rough script? Is it pitched as a Disney+ project or just as a Muppet project that needs a home? A crossover between Muppets and The Haunted Mansion, how does that come about, who suggested combining the two? Can you explain how fans got The Muppets to go from lockdown to Disney+ in a Haunted Mansion crossover? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB – Well, it seems that there are several questions here to answer, but I would have to say that the special came up from a conversation between the Muppet Studios and Disney+. Disney+ was looking for holiday specials with The Muppets, but I don't know exactly who it was that said the Haunted Mansion should be a part of it. And I don't exactly remember why Halloween became the holiday, but we started to talk and think about what kind of Halloween story would be fun to tell, which lead me to thinking about Gonzo. I liked the routine in The Muppets Take the Bowl live show, where Gonzo was performing his “World of Magical Delusions”. That he was now dabbling in magic. This could be a fun connection to a Haunted place. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>From there we started to think of how that could apply to the Haunted Mansion, and everything started to grow out of that. Things like, Gonzo wanting to go to a Halloween challenge at a Haunted Mansion began to feel like fun, the 100 th year anniversary of the disappearance of his magician mentor in that mansion, then The Muppets playing the roles of the iconic Haunted Mansion characters began to fit, Pepe going along for the ride thinking it was just a Hollywood party, fit. And ultimately, we decided that it would be great to tell a story about Gonzo overcoming his greatest fears. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEmZhHcOuU5MCXJJcPmwvJOytWBTRBVDbG1Q4d6h8mT4_jjNCB_Yzye28iQ_ZILEJNcFm__XEAZ44BxYnZAChLjEQAHrkv3f-JKCaHsCLURgt2zI46kgNh0B0fU0goLEzJ9C_52e9Gljtn/s590/dead-muppets-590x293.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="293" data-original-width="590" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEmZhHcOuU5MCXJJcPmwvJOytWBTRBVDbG1Q4d6h8mT4_jjNCB_Yzye28iQ_ZILEJNcFm__XEAZ44BxYnZAChLjEQAHrkv3f-JKCaHsCLURgt2zI46kgNh0B0fU0goLEzJ9C_52e9Gljtn/s320/dead-muppets-590x293.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>(2) The writing in this movie is perfect for The Muppets, these act like The Muppets, speaking, reacting, expressing, every character is written perfectly. “Don’t worry folks, we’re not going to be explaining all the jokes” says the Muppet Ghost as he breaks the fourth wall. That’s how you write for The Muppets, that in my opinion is a perfect simple example. I’ve always felt that when it comes to writing for The Muppets, not only must it be a well written story, it must be a well written Muppet story. Meaning having The Muppets act, speak and feel like themselves is just as important as the story they’re telling us. For example, the ending, when the title “Muppets Haunted Mansion” appears under a rainbow, how clever and something that fits perfectly in Muppet style writing when you combine Muppets and Horror, I really like that idea. This movie has a The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island vibe to it, it feels like Muppets from the 90’s, The Muppets at their peak without Jim Henson. Was this a difficult task for you when coming up with the dialogue for each character? Is there an example of a line changed for another character because it suits them better? Could you basically give us a little journey into your mind whilst writing this special and the focus on character consistency as well as story?</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - No, it wasn't particularly challenging to write the characters because I'm pretty darn familiar with all of them at this point in my career with the Muppets. Also having such great partners to write with like Kelly Younger, Kirk Thatcher and Jim Lewis, it allows you to play and bounce the characters off each other, as if they were actually in the room. Because Kirk, Jim and I are so familiar with the characters and Kelly who had already gone through a character learning curve on “Muppets Now”, it was actually quite easy for us to create the story. I say easy, but of course there are always challenges. When you're working with such collaborative people with such brilliant minds it certainly makes the journey and the outcome a lot more fun and truer to the characters. We understand the history and evolution of these characters, so finding their voices isn’t the hard part. The hard part has been getting someone to give us the opportunity and to finally allow the crazy people in the room to run things. Thanks to the new heads of the Muppet Studios realizing the importance of what I’ve just previously mentioned and putting their trust in someone like myself in a much more meaningful position than ever before, I hope you’ll be seeing more and more Muppet productions like this one. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(3) Every character was well written in this special but seeing as this was Gonzo and Pepe centric, they’re the ones who stood out for me the most. Pepe was used perfectly in this special, since his debut I’ve always liked the edge that Pepe brings to The Muppets, “every year same thing, same Muppets”. Growing up my friends’ thought Muppets were only for kids but they all enjoyed Pepe, they didn’t consider him a “childish” Muppet. In Muppets Haunted Mansion, Pepe was used at his best, which made the special better for it, “don’t trust free cheese”. I want to ask how difficult is it when writing for Pepe to get him right but since you wrote it, created Pepe and perform him, that answers my question, “but what did you know about love? You’re dating a chicken”. In this movie Pepe was teamed up with Gonzo and they work well together. In fact, the more I think about it, Pepe also works well teamed up with Kermit or Fozzie and especially Miss Piggy and my preference would be with Sam the Eagle or Uncle Deadly. Are there any characters in particular you would like to see Pepe teamed up with? Has there ever been a character that has not worked well with Pepe, maybe Robin for example? What was the inspiration behind having Pepe and Gonzo team up for this special? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB – Well, you seem to be asking several questions at one time, but I'll answer the Pepe one if that's okay? I would love to see Pepe do more with Scooter. I think they have a great dynamic. Pepe the unpredictable instigator and troublemaker, Scooter with his always prepared, willing and buttoned up approach. I think that makes for a fun dynamic and conflicts, but not in a cynical way. I also like when Pepe is with Walter, who he refers to as Howard, so I think there is some gold still to mine there as well. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(4) For the longest time, Pepe alongside Bobo Bear and Big Mean Carl and to a degree maybe also Angle-Marie and Howard Tubman, were the only new Muppets to join the franchise and keep growing as characters throughout the years. Finally in 2011 Walter became the new Muppet and Uncle Deadly returned from obscurity. Slowly there after old classics have returned alongside new characters, giving The Muppets a fresh new feel to them. Beverley Plume, Joe the Legal Weasel, the Screaming Goat, all returning for this special. Alongside old obscure characters, who like Uncle Deadly are hopefully making a big comeback starting with Muppets Haunted Mansion including Johnny Fiama, Sal, Dr Phil Van Neuter, Mulch, J.G, Mo, amongst others. Newly introduced (or brought back from obscurity) in this special we have the “Dunn Dunn Dunn” Mummy and Skeleton Duddy, the Giant Squid, Old Lady Muppet, Carter and going way back in time The Dog from Jim Henson’s 1986 The Tale Of The Bunny Picnic. How important do you think it is to introduce new Muppets into the group? Fresh new characters for the old cast to interact with, Muppets with perhaps more modern personalities? Not even new Muppets, obscure Muppets introduced as new characters, old fans would be happy, new fans would have new characters to hopefully make a connection with. Do you think this is important? It was handled very well in Muppets Haunted Mansion, was this a conscious decision to bring back newly introduced characters such as Beverley Plume? And going back into the past and bringing back old classics like Johnny Fiama and Sal? Or is it just something that naturally fell in place as you told the story? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - Once we knew that we were going to be doing a big ballroom scene, we wanted to fill the Mansion Hall with as many characters or ghosts as possible. So, with the help of the amazing Puppet Heap workshop, who looks after and takes care of all The Muppets, we went through their catalogue of characters with them and found all different characters that maybe we hadn't seen or just haven't used in a long time. And we began to populate the scene with them, which was a lot of fun to do. All those characters would of course include newer and older ones, and it just all felt right… so we went for it. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(5) Pepe, Bobo, Johnny Fiama, Big Mean Carl, Bubba, Angle-Marie, Howard Tubman and then we have Dr Teeth, Rowlf, Swedish Chef and Mahna-Mahna. What is the difference for you between those two groups of characters when performing them? Those you inherited from Jim Henson, do you have to approach them differently when performing them? Such as having to be more conscious of how they would react or what they would say or by this point does the flow come naturally like with Pepe and Bobo? Dr Teeth singing “Dancing In The Moonlight” at the very beginning of Muppets Haunted Mansion was great, I immediately knew it was Dr Teeth singing. Dr Teeth and Rowlf sound the same but still sound different somehow, you manage to capture that too, amazing. If I hear only vocals coming from Dr Teeth or Rowlf, I know which one is which yet I can’t describe what the difference is, can you shed some light on that? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - Yes there is a difference between performing characters that I've created or collaborated on, versus characters that someone else created first. I’m not really a voice match artist, so when I'm performing Jim's characters, they are fair impersonations at best. What I try to do is hopefully present to the audience a certain feeling or essence of the original character to help compensate for that imperfect voice match. Afterall, the voice is really only ten percent of the character for the Muppets. It’s the other ninety percent or the characteristics and personality of the character that makes them who they are and their uniqueness. I will never be able to actually become Jim's characters, because they weren't born from me. So yes, I need to be more conscious, rehearsed and thoughtful about the choices that I make for those characters. As opposed to performing my own characters which are a part of me, and so I feel more comfortable being able to live more in the moment with them. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>The difference between Dr. Teeth and Rowlf, and what I believe you're hearing, is something that Dave Goelz explained to me years ago. He described what Jim Henson looked like when he would perform Dr. Teeth. He said that Jim would grit his teeth with a big Cheshire cat smile. And so, when I perform Dr. Teeth, I keep that in mind and actually perform him that way. Rowlf has a more rounded playful, innocent quality to his voice. Dr. Teeth is more down and dirty, grittier and pushes through his teeth when he speaks. At least that's my approach and maybe that's what you're hearing? </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(6) I was so surprised by Gonzo in this special, he was perfect, this is the Gonzo I grew up with, “cool, I hope it’s finally something scary”. Since Gonzo never left us and has always been performed by Dave Goelz, I hadn’t realized that I missed Gonzo, classic Gonzo, who in my opinion came back in full force in this special. “Hey since you’re on a break, could you contact somebody from the great beyond?”. I think my favourite part about this special is getting this particular Gonzo to show up, I also like how Gonzo has matured throughout the years and this special balanced classic crazy Gonzo with matured Gonzo very well. Near the end, when Gonzo is locked in room 999, talking to his older nose shrivelled self was brilliant writing, Gonzo has so many layers, I’m so happy this scene exists. As a fan, I feel this Gonzo is different to say Gonzo from The Muppets (2015), “Oooh indoor lightning, fantastic”. From being worried that his mother hadn’t contacted him since she left on her holiday in 2015 to being excited to be scared in 2021, why is that tone in Gonzo so vastly different sometimes? Is the writing for these characters really as important as I believe it is or does that not play as big a factor? “Oh yeah? Well, I have faced my fears and homicidal brides are not on the list”. How important was Dave Goelz input in getting this particular Gonzo back, did he have any or was Gonzo simply written perfectly within the script? Could you give me an idea what factors took place to give fans this particular version of Gonzo? Is it just understandable knowledge of the character within the writing process or more to do with Dave Goelz’s input on the character? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB – Well, as I mentioned before, working in a room with people who are very familiar with the legacy and history of the characters, makes it a bit easier to get closer to the characters true voices and personalities. But, more importantly, yes Dave did consult on the script and make sure that things felt right for him, for Gonzo. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>For me, I always try (if I’m in that position) to get any scripts or creative to the performers as early as possible, so that they can have some real input before and while it's being written. That unfortunately, is not often the case due to various reasons, but is most likely why sometimes the voices of the characters might have missed the mark in the past. Sometimes these scripts come too late and makes it very difficult for the performers to always navigate and stay completely true to the characters because the script is dictating the story and the jokes. You don't always have time to fix those things that should be fixed, but when you have a writing room that is aware of these obstacles for the performers ahead of time at its inception, then the material gets shared sooner than later. And in turn, is more successful. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(7) Muppet music is so important to any Muppet production, after The Muppets (2015) and Muppets Now (2020) I was beginning to miss musical Muppets. Some of the reviews I’ve read online, many people were caught by surprise by the songs, meaning for many, Muppets and music wasn’t something that went hand in hand for them. Not only did this bring music back into The Muppets, it opens with an Electric Mayhem (Dr Teeth) song, what a way to start a special on the right tone, music and The Electric Mayhem. “Dancing in The Monnlight” by The Electric Mayhem seems to be the favourite, at least from the reviews I’ve seen. “Rest in Pieces”, “Life Hereafter”, “Tie The Knot Tango”, these songs were not just good, they were Muppet style good. Could you please tell me more about the music in this special? Was it a sure thing from the start that this would have music? Was it opted at any point not to have music, maybe the horror theme and music would not balance well? Is the music one of the reasons this feels so Muppety compared to past projects? Would you agree that Muppet productions need to always be somewhat musical? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - I can't say that I actually believe that all Muppet productions need to be musical in some way because ultimately what works best for any particular project depends on the concept itself. So, there may be situations where music doesn't work, but I happen to believe and feel that music is at the root and the heart of The Muppets. I tend to want to have music in many things that we do if we can find a way to organically present it and not just throw it in for the sake of having music. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>As for the songs in Muppets Haunted Mansion I always wanted to have music in the holiday special. We knew because it was a shorter runtime that we would have to limit the number of songs, therefore I suggested that they be spread out in our three acts. Three songs - two shorter numbers and one larger production number in the middle. Once we had created the outline for the script, we each decided to take a run at thirds of writing the script. I took the first third, Kelly took the second third and Kirk took the third, third. These were first approaches at the material, but we knew that we would then sit together and combine and write together the entire script and lyrics.</b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>It was a way to get us rolling along and moving quickly because we had a short window of time to get to production. For my section, I was inspired by the graveyard epitaphs at the Haunted Mansion to create the lyrics for that song. We used some of the original epitaphs but also created some new ones. Kelly wrote all of the lyrics for the big production number in the ballroom, and it was originally titled “Be Our Ghost”. When we found out we couldn't use the tune to “Be Our Guest”, which was the intention behind the song, (to spoof it but to pay homage as well), we tailored the lyrics to a different beat and style...Big Band. Kirk worked on the Bride and Pepe song, which originally wasn’t a Tango but ultimately developed and grew into that perfect style, knowing that we wanted to add that Spanish flair. We all had ideas as to what style of music we wanted to incorporate with these lyrics, but it wasn't until the brilliance of Ed Mitchell and Steve Morrell, that they would come together so beautifully with such great music and the melodies. Once again, a totally collaborative experience between people who are familiar with The Muppets and have been writing words and music for them for many, many years. So grateful. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(8) Johnny Fiama and Sal! Fans got them back, last big production they had appeared in was 2005’s Muppets Wizard of Oz, almost seventeen years ago. 1999’s Muppet From Space was the last time I remember seeing Dr. Phil Van Neuter, thanks to Muppets Haunted Mansion he returned after over twenty years. Nigel (both of them), Mulch, Wayne, Wanda, Andy Pig, Randy Pig, J.G, Pokey, Mo, Beautiful Day Monster, we’re going so obscure I don’t even know the name of the red Frackle. As a fan I am so pleased to see Muppets from all eras appearing together. How do these more obscure characters end up appearing in the special, what is the process? Are they written into the script and therefor the characters are then used or is it more of a grab the first obscure Muppet character closest on the shelf and throw them in the mix? For example, is it important for the writer to be familiar with Dr. Phil Van Neuter so that he makes it into the production? If Polly Lobster, Clueless Morgan and Mad Monty were ever to reappear, would they have to be written into a script first? What reason would there need to be to rebuild Clueless Morgan and bring him back? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - There has to be a very good reason for characters like Clueless, Polly Lobster and Mad Monty to return to a new production. If they don't have a substantial supporting role or leading role, then chances are these types of characters that have either decayed or need major refurbishment will not be able to be built. It becomes a cost issue. That type of investment must be considered as part of the projects budget, so the characters need to be essential for a major investment like that to be made. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>In the case of Johnny and Sal, Sal had already been refurbished a few years ago and there were discussions that we might possibly use the two of them on the new “Muppets Now” series. And they had begun refurbishing Johnny, but their involvement in the show just didn't pan out. Fortunately, we knew that these characters could now be used and found a great spot for them in the Halloween special as one of the Bride’s husbands…and her husband's sidekick. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(9) Most of these long-lost forgotten characters to have reappeared in Muppets Haunted Mansion are performed by no other than Brian Henson. Brian adds so much energy to his characters, Sal, Dr. Phil Van Neuter and Nigel being my favourite, though until this day, I still also remember Seymour. I really hope Brian’s characters continue appearing in new productions, performed by the man himself. I like knowing Brian Henson is involved with The Muppets, the more Henson’s associated with The Muppets the better. At this point in time, as a fan, for me, Sal is just as classic a Muppet as Scooter is, he fits perfectly within The Muppets and like Pepe adds an extra edge to the franchise. Fozzie and Kermit, Miss Piggy and Kermit, Grover and Kermit, Bert and Ernie, Rowlf and Miss Piggy, Jim Henson and Frank Oz were a very strong duo and it showed on screen. Jim and Frank understood each other, played well off each other, as fun as that is for them, fans in return get better chemistry and banter when watching these Muppets on screen. Gonzo and Rizzo, Bunsen and Beaker, Statler and Waldorf, Andy Pig and Randy Pig, Boober Fraggle and Wembley Fraggle, the same goes for Steve Whitmire and Dave Goelz. It seems like every Muppeteer has that specific person they connect best with and it shows through their characters. Pepe and Seymore, Johnny Fiama and Sal, Bobby Vegan and Samson Knight, I get a feeling your comedic duo is Brian Henson, would you agree with this? Do you think fans will see more of your chemistry together through The Muppets? Johnny Fiama and Sal, I want more. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - I certainly hope so. Brian and I do have a very comfortable and natural chemistry together. I think it's apparent when we perform and just like you mentioned, with previous pairings of performers, I think we complement each other and find fun characters and relationships that are born out of our own. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>We always have fun when we're performing together, we make each other laugh, think, push each other to be better and find a balance that is always entertaining. It had been sixteen years (which is hard to believe) since we had performed Johnny and Sal together, but when we had the opportunity on this special, it really was like no time had gone by at all. It just felt natural. I'm fortunate to be able to work with so many talented people and sometimes I suppose you just find that match, that special timing unlike others. Not that when I'm paired up with the other amazing performers, that we don't have a connection, it's just sometimes it clicks differently. And that's most likely because of the relationship that exists below the characters, below the frame. I mean, Brian and I have known each other since we were seventeen. That has to mean something. I hope we’ll continue to do more…it's always the best time. </b></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">(10) What I liked a lot about Muppets Haunted Mansion is how it felt like The Muppets were living in a world full of Muppets and Humans as opposed to just a “human world” with the main Muppets inserted into it. Granted lots of fans know who the obscure characters are, but when obscure characters are thrown into the mix, alongside Whatnots, then it feels like a Muppety world. The Muppet Ghosts dancing in the graveyard, The Caretaker (Darren Criss) accompanied by a Muppet Dog, The Mummy and Skeleton Duddy wondering around the mansion, the Giant Squid etc… It wasn’t just our main characters interacting with humans, it’s our main characters interacting with other Muppets too. 2002’s It’s A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie handled this very well, just with it’s opening scene alone. 1992’s The Muppets Christmas Carol also tackled this Muppet world building very well and it made such a huge difference for me as a fan. Do you think creating a world full of Muppets is just as important as telling a story using the main characters such as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, Dr Bunsen, Beaker etc…? Was it a conscious decision to do this on Muppets Haunted Mansion or did it just naturally come about? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>BB - I think in the case of Muppets Haunted Mansion we primarily exist inside the Mansion, so it lends itself to being filled with Muppets. I also think this is why it feels like we're in a Muppets world with humans, versus a human world with Muppets. I personally love the idea that Muppets live in a world with us. I suppose great shows like Fraggle Rock, where you often spend more time in their world than in the human world is more along the lines of what you're talking about? Which I do love as well, but my preference is to put The Muppets in our world and if you choose to believe in them, then they are real and they do coexist with us. That for me is the most fun, that they/we are part of one world, everyone's world, not just a Muppet world. </b></span></div><div><br /></div><span style="font-size: large;">Many of the questions I’ve asked have also recently been answered on an all new <a href="https://youtu.be/wtAdPI9NqSU" target="_blank">The Barretta Brother’s</a> episode, centred around Muppets Haunted Mansion.
