ABC is showing faith in "The Muppets".
ABC has picked up three more episodes from the new comedy series "The Muppets", bringing its first-season order to 16 episodes.
16 episodes may not be your normal full season (which is usually 22 episodes). However, "The Muppets" is not your normal TV series. This series is very expensive to produce, and currently they are in the process of shooting episode #9. Episode #5 just aired this week, Episode #6 airs next week. They began shooting the Pilot during the last week of July.
To keep quality over quantity, 16 makes a lot more sense to all involved. If a second season of "The Muppets" is ordered, it would probably receive the full 22 episodes.
"The Muppets" had always been earmarked for a limited run. Laying out ABC’s midseason plans at the upfronts, network topper Paul Lee said the idea is that after "The Muppets" ends its limited run (originally 13 episodes), "Fresh Off the Boat" would move to 8PM and used to launch new family comedy "The Real O’Neals". "Uncle Buck" is another mid-season series targeted for ABC's schedule.
"The Muppets" still ranks as Tuesday’s highest-rated new TV show among Adults 18-49 (2.6). On average, the freshman show is improving its half-hour for ABC by 69% in Total Viewers (7.6 million) and by 86% in Adults 18-49 (2.6), standing as the net’s strongest performing Tuesday comedy in 4 years.
In its most recent airing this week, The Muppets returned against the World Series with an uptick in Adults 18-49 (+8%).
"The Muppets" ranks as ABC’s final fall freshman series to get a back-order. The network picked up six additional hours of Sunday drama "Quantico" and added a full back-nine to Friday comedy "Dr. Ken". Meanwhile, ABC recently trimmed "Blood and Oil" from 13 episodes to 10.
"The Muppets" joins ABC’s "Quantico" and "Dr. Ken", Fox’s "Grandfathered", "The Grinder" and "Rosewood", NBC’s "Blindspot" and CBS’ "Limitless" as well as "Life in Pieces" to score an additional episode order.
